Set in 1940s Indiana, the entire cast is predominantly white, with the only people of color being portrayed as stereotypical characters, such as a Chinese restaurant owner with a heavy accent. In today’s society, where representation and inclusivity are becoming increasingly important, it’s hard to overlook this flaw in the film. Furthermore, the film has been overplayed and glorified to the point where it has lost its charm. It seems as though every holiday season, “A Christmas Story” is constantly on repeat on every channel, and it’s hard to escape the endless re-runs. And while some may argue that it’s a tradition and brings back fond memories, I can’t help but feel like it’s become a forced tradition, rather than a genuine connection to the film.
