I made new friends, joined clubs, and even managed to maintain a decent GPA. But as with many college students, binge drinking was a recurring theme in my social life.

I can still vividly remember the night it all went wrong. It was a typical Friday night – my friends and I had decided to hit up a few parties and then end the night at our favorite dive bar. As usual, we started off with some pre-gaming at our dorm, and I, being the competitive person that I am, wanted to keep up with my friends who seemed to have a higher alcohol tolerance than me.

But somewhere along the way, I lost count of my drinks and found myself stumbling into the bar, already feeling the effects of the alcohol. My friends tried to hold me back, but I was determined to keep going.

And that’s when I spotted it – a worn-out, faded war t-shirt hanging on the bar’s wall. Without a second thought, I pulled it off and put it on, thinking it would make for a hilarious joke.

But as the night went on, the joke turned into a nightmare. I became belligerent, picking fights with strangers and yelling profanities at the top of my lungs. My friends, embarrassed by my behavior, decided to call it a night and take me back to our dorm. But on the way, I stumbled into a group of veterans who were attending a nearby conference, wearing the same war t-shirt I had on.

At first, I thought they would find it as funny as I did. But as soon as they saw the t-shirt, their faces turned serious, and one of them confronted me, asking if I knew the significance of the shirt. It was then that I realized the gravity of my actions. I had disrespected those who had risked their lives for their country, and my drunken mistake had caused them pain. I quickly apologized and took off the t-shirt, ashamed and embarrassed by my thoughtless behavior. It was a sobering lesson that changed my perspective on alcohol and the impact of my actions. Looking back, I am grateful for that moment of reckoning because it taught me to be more mindful of my choices and the consequences they may have. In the end, I learned that drinking too much in college may seem like a rite of passage, but it can also have unintended and regrettable consequences.
